Capital Requirements, Risk Choice, and Liquidity Provision in a Business Cycle Model

چکیده
This paper develops a quantitative dynamic general equilibrium model in which households' preferences for safe and liquid assets constitute a violation of Modigliani and Miller. I show that the scarcity of these coveted assets created by increased bank capital requirements can reduce overall bank funding costs and increase bank lending. I quantify this mechanism in a two-sector business cycle model featuring a banking sector that provides liquidity and has excessive risk-taking incentives. Under reasonable parametrizations, the marginal bene t of higher capital requirements related to this channel signi cantly exceeds the marginal cost, indicating that US capital requirements have been sub-optimally low.

Human capital investment and portfolio choice over the life-cycle∗
I study a theoretical model of life-cycle portfolio choice for an investor who has an option to invest in human capital but is liquidity constrained. I find that, since the young are more likely to exercise the option than the old, they are more concerned about liquidity risk (i.e. the risk that the liquidity constraint binds when it is optimal to invest). This, in turn, implies a hump-shaped p...

This paper suggests a solution to what has become known as the "private equity premium puzzle" (Moskowitz and Vissing-Jorgensen (2002)). In this setting, becoming an entrepreneur is equivalent to ...
متن کاملHuman capital investment and portfolio choice over the life-cycle∗ Preliminary and incomplete
I develop a model of life-cycle portfolio choice with non-tradeable idiosyncratic labor income where the agent has an option to invest in human capital, for example through education. The inability to borrow against her human capital depresses the agent’s demand for equity, as she is concerned about being liquidity constrained when it is optimal to invest. The model has many predictions that ar...
